The Payakaraopeta Women’s Mutually Aided Co-operative Thrift and Credit Society (PWMACTCS) was established on 23rd September 1997 under the APMACS Act 1995 and taken over the activity of thrift and credit for the rural women from the Payakaraopeta Stri Sanghala Abhivruthi Samakya (PSSAS), which was doing the program from 1994-95.

Poor Women are engaged in a diverse number of occupations for survival. But they have access neither to improved technology nor to institutional credit and marketing. They do not have access also to institutional health facilities, and even where they exist, the utilization is extremely low. As a result, their productivity is affected. Further, the literacy rates among the workingwomen, in several studies, are found to be even lower than the non-working women in urban areas. In the informal markets, the workingwomen are depending on moneylenders and traders. Thus, low literacy rates, ill health, lack of access to credit and lack of access to improved skills and technology form a vicious circle of high morbidity and mortality, poverty, high fertility rates, low incomes, and enhanced poverty. Therefore to provide institutional credit the PSSAS/PWMACTCS was established. Seventy percent (70%) of the members participate in economic activities. Majority of them are agricultural laborers, who pursue petty trade, selling green fodder, preparation of brooms, vegetable vending, dry fish marketing, fruit vending, flower nursery as subsidiary occupation.
